TOURS 2010-2011

TOURS 2010-2011

We are pleased to offer a very select range of photographic tours throughout Britain and soon to Scandinavia.

Having walked and photographed extensively throughout Britain's upland areas and as a trained mountain leader Richard is well placed to take you to some spectacular and little known locations. We will only be offering 8 such tours per year in Scotland, Cumbria and Snowdonia, all areas known and researched extesively by Richard over the past 15 years.

Joining Richard as co-leader on some of the tours will be Joe Cornish, Melanie Foster or Gari Beet.

Tours with Richard alone are limited to 4 participants. With two leaders the limit is 10 participants with the exception of those lead by Joe and Richard where, due to the nature of the locations we will visit the group will be strictly limited to 6.

SUTHERLAND, THE WILD NORTH COAST OCTOBER 2010

SUTHERLAND, THE WILD NORTH COAST OCTOBER 2010

NO MORE PLACES AVAILABLE. Next tour Autumn 2011.

October 4th-9th 2010. Six day tour based at Durness and Kyle of Tongue. Cost per person, £645 includes transfers from Inverness, transport, accommodation, food and all tuition. Deposit £100.

If you love wide open spaces this is the tour for you. With mile after mile of white sand beaches, spectacular rocky coastline and some of Scotland's most charismatic mountains Sutherland has it all. Driving north past the mighty Quinag and on past Kylesku the landscape opens up. Lochan studded moorland punctuated by truly impressive peaks, sudden turns in the road opening up views out to sea through narrow fiord like lochs. Abandoned cottages, boats and vehicles litter the landscape between the mountains and the sea offering a wealth of photographic opportunity no matter what the weather. The quality of light here is different too. Being so far north we will be closer to the Arctic circle than the south of Britain, the air is cooler and carries less moisture making for improved clarity over distance.

During this tour we will spend time in Durness visiting locations including Balnakeil Bay and Faraid Head, Oldshoremore, Smoo Cave, Sangobeg and inland glens adjoining Foinaven, Cranstackie and Arkle. Next we will relocate to the Kyle of Tongue, a stunning sea loch crossed by a causeway affording grand views to the iconic shapes of Ben Loyal and Ben Hope ( Scotland's most northerly munro). As well as these classic views we will visit small coastal settlements including Talmine and Skerray with old cottages and wrecked boats aplenty.

ARGYLL WITH LIGHT AND LAND

ARGYLL WITH LIGHT AND LAND

25th-29th October 2010. Just a couple of places remaining, visit the Light and Land website for more details. Tour lead by Richard Childs and David Ward.

Scotland is a land of spectacular scenery blessed by elusive yet miraculous light. Lovers of the outdoors flood north from Glasgow heading for popular locations including Glencoe, Fort William, Skye and Ullapool. Most pass along the edge of Argyll vowing to return at some point to visit places like Oban and Inveraray. The fact that very few do is understandable, Argyll is after all an area of lowland Scotland offering little for those looking for dramatic scenes. Or so they think.

The reality is very different. Argyll covers an area of some 8000 square kilometres. Larger than the Lake District, Peak District, Snowdonia, Dartmoor and New Forest National Parks combined and with a coastline longer than that of France. Within this vast area you will find landscape from high mountain to sandy shore with everything in between including Scotland's largest remaining remnants of the ancient Atlantic Oak forests.

During the tertiary period the chain of volcanoes that erupted along the western coast of Scotland formed this landscape and there is plenty of evidence of their powerful influence today. All of the mountains to the West of Loch Lomond and South of Glencoe fall within the old boundary of Argyll which stretches out the far end of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. The highest mountain, Bidean nam Bian rises to 1150 metres on the south side of Glencoe and the ranges continue south to Loch Eck near Dunoon 90 miles away.

Following the last ice age the rich sediments washed out of the hills allowing great forests to develop. There is evidence of human habitation dating back 6000 years, no more so than in Kilmartin Glen which has more than 350 ancient monuments within six miles of the village including the remains of the first castle of the Scots at Dunadd.

Of course Argyll plays host to a number of Scotland's iconic castles too. These include Kilchurn on the shores of Loch Awe, Scotland's longest, Stalker on it's tiny island off the coast at Appin and Inveraray, a classic in the Baronial style.

In November, with autumn colour near its peak, there will be no shortage of locations to visit and we will rarely be more than half an hours drive from the coast which, facing both East and West on Argyll's many peninsulas will give us plenty of opportunity to photograph both sunrise and sunset.

HARRIS AND LEWIS, JEWELS OF THE ATLANTIC COAST. NOVEMBER 2010

HARRIS AND LEWIS, JEWELS OF THE ATLANTIC COAST. NOVEMBER 2010

PLACES AVAILABLE 3.

Date 6th-13th of November 2010. Seven day tour based at Seilebost on South Harris. Price £775 includes accommodation, food, ferry crossing, transport on the island and tuition. Deposit £175.

Autumn in the Outer Hebrides. Soft light, subtle colour, a sense of real peace and quiet. With nights drawing in the air is full of the scent of peat smoke and the landscape is relatively empty of people. While October can be stormy, November tends to offer more settled weather but with all the beautiful colour on the hill as the grasses take on their winter hues. We start our tour on Harris with some of the best beaches in Europe. Wide expanses of sand backed by Marram topped dunes and breathtaking views to distant hills and islands. We shall spend our days here exploring the many beaches and the barren East coast with its numerous ruined crofthouses. Longer trips will take us to the rocky West coast of Lewis. Here we will find mile after mile of dramatically shredded cliff top scenery, sea stacks and beautiful bays. We will also take the opportunity to photograph the fantastic Callanish standing stones at either dawn or dusk.

SKYE, THE AWESOME WINGED ISLE. JANUARY 2011

SKYE, THE AWESOME WINGED ISLE. JANUARY 2011

PLACES AVAILABLE 1.

Date 24th-28th of January 2011.

Five day tour based in Broadford. Cost £695 per person (includes accommodation, food, transport and all tuition). Deposit £150.

Whenever I approach the Isle of Skye it is with a great sense of anticipation. Passing Eilean Donan castle on the shores of Loch Duich the first view of the impressive Red Cuillin appears. As I cross the bridge onto the island the view to the far north includes the iconic hills of The Storr and Quiraing in Trotternish beyond Portree, the island's largest community. Driving beyond Broadford the road is forced to hug the coast as the mountains crowd in. Finally having driven up through a near lunar landscape and descended again to the sea the mighty heart of the island is revealed. The mountains of the Black Cuillin make up the finest ridge walk in Britain. From all angles and at any distance these are impressive hills and will form the focus of the first half of our week. We will visit the iconic locations of Elgol and Sligachan for the classic views but will also be spending time in lesser known locations offering awe inspiring views of both mountain and sea.

To the North of the island we will find equally impressive locations including the Quiraing, Neist Point, and the stunning shoreline from Staffin to Duntulm with views to the Outer Hebrides.

While the days will be short at this time of year we will be able to photograph right through the day as the sun will stay close to the horizon providing us with superb modelling light and amazing colour. There is a strong chance that we will experience some winter weather adding a further dimension to the landscape.

LAKE DISTRICT MOUNTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY

LAKE DISTRICT MOUNTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY

PLACES AVAILABLE 3.

MONDAY 21st-SATURDAY 26th MARCH 2011.

We are delighted to be offering this six day tour lead by RICHARD CHILDS and JOE CORNISH. Taking your photography to new heights Richard and Joe will take you to some of their favourite mountain locations around the central fells. Based in Grasmere we will have ready access to both the Langdale mountains and Helvellyn while just a short drive will give us access to the fantasic hills above Hartsop Village, the Coniston fells and Blencathra.

This course is all about mountain photography and will involve three full days on the hill with three further days working at lower levels. To that end we ask that all participants are 'hill fit' and have some hillwalking experience. We will experience sustained ascents of up to three hours duration stopping en route where photographic opportunity presents itself and will be descending by torchlight after dark.

Our hill days will take the form of linear or circular walks covering 6-10 miles on the ground with ascents to over 3000ft. During the day we will pause at 3 or 4 top quality locations but will not ignore opportunities to photograph spectacular mountain light should it occur en route. Richard and Joe's extensive knowledge of the Lakeland Fells and their photographic potential will guarantee a unique experience at a time when longer daylight hours combined with low angled light can make for mountain magic.

The cost of this six day tour is £1295 and includes all guiding and tuition, transport, food and hotel accommodation during the week. Deposit £325.
PLACES ARE STRICTLY LIMITED TO SIX ONLY.

ARDNAMURCHAN PENINSULA, THE WILD WEST APRIL 2011.

ARDNAMURCHAN PENINSULA, THE WILD WEST APRIL 2011.

PLACES AVAILABLE 4.

On the rocky shoreline of mainland Britain's most westerly point, the reassuring solidity of a lighthouse at my back I stand, eyes fixed on the horizon, breathing in the thick, salt-laden, ozone rich air. Islands sit at a distance; Coll, Tiree, Muck and Rum, all visible from here. The waves, remnants of an Atlantic storm roll in and over the skerries below turning the sea to foam. The sky tonight is soft and overcast, bathing the landscape in an even lilac/blue hue, so different to the previous evening when I had hunkered down close to the surf, fighting to make images in the teeth of the storm.

The Ardnamurchan Peninsula, while a committing place to get to provides the photographer with a vast wealth of possibilities. With coastline as wild as anywhere in Britain and sublime beaches such as Sanna Bay, ruined castles and crofthouses, and some of the finest ancient oak forest I have ever seen within easy reach I am very excited to be offering this five day tour for APRIL 2011.

Provisional dates 4th-8th April, which will be confirmed within the next few days.
This exclusive tour is available for only 4 participants to ensure plenty of one-to-one tuition and most importantly space at each location to allow for photography without compromise.
